Barsanadham at Austin

We were planning on spending one entire day at Austin during the Thanksgiving holliday last week. But due to the unexpected problem with our vehicle, had to shorten it to just two places. One of them was the Barsanadham (US center of Jagadguru kripalu Parishat) spread on around 200 acre. A beautiful temple and ashram away from all the noises. Few pictures from there.

Photography Homework : Halloween

Halloween, the theme for the first homework from my Photography class!!. Our teacher gave us that skull( ofcourse plastic & made in China! ) and asked us to use our imagination to create a stilllife image on Halloween. Eventhough the skull was imitation, as i took it out from the packet i felt uneasy , some sort of creepiness. Few minutes of trying to set it up with the household tools, i was getting along great with my creepy cheerful friend.

Afterall, at the end , all of us will end up in that form..

Ok, enough of philosophy, after very many set of arrangements , this is what i came up with.

River Walk during Christmas

I was checking our Camera and saw few snaps my husband had taken during Christmas . I missed to upload it during December

Vishu Sadya

Well, i cannot call it the authentic kerala Sadya (an elaborate vegetarian meal served among hindus during auspicious days), since the number of dishes usually come around 20-24.
Due to our exam season, both of us (me and my husband) reduced our sadya into a mini Sadya with just few dishes.

The major attraction was the banana leaf. I do not know why but eating in banana leaf gives the effect of being in Kerala. It brings back memories of the sumptous lunch /feast when we go to our marriages. I was amazed to see the leaves for sale at our local HEB. It seems the tropical areas of Mexico and Central America uses them for "Tamales".

Have a look at this site to read about banana leaf tamales..
http://elise.com/recipes/archives/005183vegetarian_banana_leaf_tamales.php. The tamale reminded me of one of Kerala's sweet dish "Ela Ada". Sometimes i wonder at the similarities of Mexican and Kerala/Indian cuisine. The use of plantains , dry red chillies, tortilla(chappathi like bread), use of spices etc. Another reason to love Texas

BAPS Swami Narayana Temple at Houston

On our way back we visited this temple in Stafford. The temple was getting ready to celebrate Diwali i guess, it was being decorated by the temple staff. I got so involved in looking at the beautiful and intricate carvings all over the temple.

Houston Journey - NASA

How can we come back from Houston without visiting NASA? . I must say you get all sorts of feeling when you visit here. Amazed at the level of capability and intelligence of those who had made this a possibility. But at the same time, philosophy, god and all sorts of confusing and scary thoughts come up about the vastness and mysteries of outer space. The above pics are those of Saturn V rocket kept for display at Johnson Space center.
The wikipedia says - "It remains the largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever brought to operational status from a height, weight and payload standpoint".

Houston journey

We had to travel to Houston for getting my Official Transcripts done for my degree from India. so we started out in our little "Kia". Started our journey early in the morning. So on the way i could catch the sunrise while we got out for our breakfast.
